REP. ROSEN CO-SPONSORS BILL TO EXPAND BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR GUN PURCHASES
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement after co-sponsoring H.R. 4240, the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2017. This bipartisan legislation would expand existing background checks for all commercial gun purchases:
“Our gun violence epidemic is not normal, and we must also realize that it’s not inevitable,” said Rosen. “Communities like mine have suffered enough from this horrific violence, and it’s time to have a real dialogue about commonsense solutions that will help keep guns out of the hands of individuals who shouldn’t have them. Enforcing background checks for all commercial gun purchases and closing outrageous loopholes that shouldn’t exist will help ensure that dangerous weapons do not end up in the wrong hands.”
BACKGROUND: Under the legislation, the current background check system would be expanded to require comprehensive and enforceable background checks on all commercial gun sales, such as those made at gun shows, over the internet or through classified ads. H.R. 4240 would also help strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) by incentivizing states to improve reporting of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill and by directing future grant funds toward better record-sharing systems. The bill will reduce federal funds to states that do not comply.
Congresswoman Jacky Rosen is a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and one of 10 original Democratic co-sponsors of the bipartisan Curbelo-Moulton bill to ban bump stocks.
