ROSEN APPLAUDS $2 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT AWARDED TO UNLV’S GEAR UP PROGRAM
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement applauding news of a federal Department of Education grant totaling $2,085,600 awarded to the University of Nevada Las Vegas for their Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs or GEAR UP:
“This Department of Education grant will strengthen UNLV’s GEAR UP program and boost the university's ability to serve low-income students working to achieve their dreams of higher education,” said Rosen. “I’m proud of the work that UNLV GEAR UP program has done for Clark County students, and this funding will invest in helping middle school kids have the support and preparation they need to pursue a post-secondary education. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, and I will continue fighting for students today to have those same opportunities."
BACKGROUND: The Department of Education’s grant will help expand UNLV’s GEAR UP program to provide long-term, comprehensive, educational outreach services to the students, teachers, and parents at four of Clark County’s most at-risk middle schools. This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools.
