ROSEN DENOUNCES EFFORT BY ENERGY DEPARTMENT TO ALLOW MORE SHIPMENTS OF NUCLEAR WASTE TO NEVADA
DOE’s Proposal to Redefine High-Level Nuclear Waste Could Allow More Shipments of Nuclear Waste to Nevada
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement in response to a Department of Energy Request for Public Comment on the Interpretation of High-Level Radioactive Waste.
“The Trump Administration is continuing to try to force Nevada to become a dumping ground for the nation’s nuclear waste,” said Rosen. “By redefining the term ‘high-level nuclear waste,’ various communities across the country will be given the greenlight to ship hazardous, radioactive materials to Nevada without our consent. I’ll continue to stand up to this Administration and fight for Nevadans who overwhelmingly oppose this ill-conceived plan.”
BACKGROUND: Last week, Rosen spoke at a committee hearing about the need for nuclear energy researchers and industry to start looking at alternatives for Yucca Mountain and convinced panelists to support a consent-based approach to waste storage. View video here.
