ROSEN RESPONDS TO SECRETARY ZINKE’S PLAN TO DOWNSIZE GOLD BUTTE
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement after Interior Secretary Zinke’s recommended downsizing Gold Butte National Monument in Nevada according to a report released on Tuesday afternoon:
“This Administration is engaged in the largest rollback of national monuments protection in recent history,” said Rosen. “Secretary Zinke's process to review our National Monuments has been a sham from the start, failing to listen to local advocates and tribal communities in Nevada who care deeply about preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Gold Butte. The Administration’s move to downsize Gold Butte National Monument is a direct attack on the Antiquities Act, and I will continue to fight this reckless decision.”
BACKGROUND: This summer, Congresswoman Rosen introduced an amendment to the Interior appropriations bill to prevent the downsizing of Gold Butte, which Republicans blocked from floor consideration. In July, the Congresswoman sent a letter to Secretary Zinke urging him to reconsider any decision to take the legally dubious step of shrinking Gold Butte and Basin and Range.
