ROSEN STATEMENT ON REPUBLICANS’ CONTINUED ATTACKS ON NATIONAL MONUMENTS
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement following today’s House Natural Resources Committee hearing on a bill that would effectively codify the Department of Interior's downsizing of Bears Ears National Monument, potentially opening up millions of acres of land and treasured cultural sites, archaeological resources, and wildlife areas to destructive development.
“I am deeply disappointed to see Republicans in Congress help this administration undermine the Antiquities Act during today’s hearing,” said Rosen. "This bill sets a dangerous precedent, and effectively goes back on our word to tribal communities who are worried about their cultural heritage being erased forever. I will continue to stand with the majority of Nevadans and Americans who are in favor of protecting our National Monuments, from Bears Ears to Gold Butte.”
BACKGROUND: Congresswoman Rosen is a co-sponsor of a bill introduced by Congressman Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) to protect and expand the Bears Ears National Monument. Congresswoman Rosen filed an amendment to the Interior Department spending bill to block the agency from de-designating or downsizing Gold Butte or Basin and Range National Monuments, both located in Nevada.
