ROSEN STATEMENT ON TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S DECISION TO DOWNSIZE NATIONAL MONUMENTS

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration's announcement that it will downsize both Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. The Administration’s decision will potentially open up millions of acres of land and treasured cultural sites, archaeological resources, and wildlife areas to destructive development.

“This thoughtless decision by the Administration will put millions of acres of protected lands at risk of mining, drilling, and other harmful activities that will forever alter these outdoor treasures,” said Rosen. “By actively undermining the Antiquities Act, this Administration is undermining our nation’s history and the natural beauty on which our country prides itself. This sets a dangerous precedent, and I stand with the majority of Nevadans and Americans who are opposed to gutting protections for our National Monuments.”

BACKGROUND:  Last week, Congresswoman Rosen co-sponsored a bill introduced by Congressman Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) to protect and expand the Bears Ears National Monument. Earlier this year, Congresswoman Rosen filed an amendment to the Interior Department spending bill to block the agency from de-designating or downsizing Gold Butte or Basin and Range National Monuments, both located in Nevada.
